Lyme Disease Risk Of Autumn Ticks
What most people don’t understand, is that ticks are far more dangerous than people realise. The simple reason is because ticks spread Lyme disease. This disease is extremely debilitating. People who are infected will experience flu-like symptoms, joint pain, and weakness. You may also experience fatigue and fever. Something else you have to realise is that this disease doesn’t always go away entirely. You may be plagued for many years by the lingering symptoms of Lyme disease.
For example, some people can develop neurological symptoms such as facial palsy, meningitis or peripheral neuropathy. You may even develop cardiovascular disease and arthritis. The point we’re trying to make is that this condition is severe, and you need to take is seriously. Something else to bear in mind is that the risk of Lyme disease increases exponentially during autumn. There are several reasons for this.
Why you need to watch out for ticks during autumn
The reason why ticks are such an issue in autumn is basically because this is peak tick season. The same applies when travelling abroad. During this time ticks are extremely hungry and also feed far more than usual. You see, ticks do not die off during winter. What usually happens is that they become less active and may also attach themselves to a host. Something else they do is fatten up for the Winter. This is why autumn ticks are so dangerous because they are also winter pests and also why you need to be especially careful during this period.
Lucky for us, ticks do not usually come indoors. If you become infected with Lyme disease, it’s almost always because you picked up a tick from going outside. This most often happens when people are doing something in their garden. For example, maybe you were raking leaves and a tick dropped on to your unnoticed.
Lyme disease and awareness
The only real way to prevent this is by maintaining awareness and learn how to spot a tick. Remind yourself that ticks are a serious problem and watch out for them. It’s a good idea to wear long clothing. Also tuck in your shirt and the bottom of your trousers. Finally, make sure to check yourself for ticks when coming back into the house.
The second most common way that people pick up ticks is when they are hiking or walking outside. This usually happens when you’re in a forest or area with tall grass. Once again, if you’re moving through one of these areas, please be aware of ticks. If you’re going walking or hiking, then take all of the usual precautions. This should include wearing long socks or trousers, and routinely checking yourself for ticks. You may also want to invest in tick repellent. Finally, if you’re camping or sleeping outside, then make sure to check yourself for ticks before going to bed.
