Are Squirrels Nesting In Your Loft?

Squirrels may seem cuddly and cute, but they can quickly turn into tenacious pests. The reason why is because squirrels often enter into homes via roofs, and are especially I interested in  lofts. They enter to find shelter and food. To a squirrel, it’s not your home, it is simply a place to live. But what can you do if there are squirrels nesting in your loft?

What are the signs of squirrels in the loft?

The first step is to determine if squirrels are actually in your loft. You do this by looking for the signs of squirrels. The first of the signs of pests living in your roof include noise. Squirrels are always heard before seen. If these are squirrels nesting in your loft, you’ll hear screeching and squeaking coming from that direction.  This will mostly happen at night, and may be loud enough to wake you up.

Something else you’ll spot in your loft are droppings. Squirrel droppings are similar to rat droppings, but larger. These droppings are dark brown and have a smooth texture. They are also shaped like torpedoes. If you find large accumulations of these droppings, then you probably have squirrels nesting in your loft.

Something else to watch out for are nests. Squirrel nests look almost like bird’s nests, although a lot larger. These nests are mostly made up of twigs and leaves. Squirrels may also use materials taken from your loft.

What to do about squirrels nesting in your loft

Spotting any of these signs, could mean that there are squirrels nesting in your loft. But how do you get rid of these squirrels? Start with your garden. Look for trees with branches overhanging your roof. These must be trimmed back. The reason why is because squirrels use these branches as a way to get onto your roof. From there they enter your loft. You can pest proof by clearing branches away and stopping access.

Next, look for holes or entrance points in your loft. This could include your chimney, ventilation system or pipes. These should be covered with wire mesh. Also look around the area where your roof meets the house. There may be holes or places where these common rodents can get into.

If you’re using your loft as a living space, then make sure that food is properly packed away. This may be attracting squirrels. Finally, you may want to consider calling pest control if the problem persists. Squirrels can cause immense damage over time. It’s a lot easier to call in a professional and get this problem solved. We can advise you and use traps for the the squirrels, thus saving you from the trouble of doing this yourself.
