10 Things That Are Said To Drive Rodents Away

Is it possible to actually drive rodents away? What we mean is, are there things you can do to get rid of these pests? Believe it or not, the answer is yes. In fact, here’s a list of pest proofing tips you can do to make your home unappealing to rats and mice.

1. Get a cat

The most simple and obvious answer to driving rodents away is this: keep a cat. Cats are usually (though not always) good at keeping rodents out of the house – they don’t want to encounter the cat. Dogs can fulfil the same role. However, most people don’t want to get a pet just to keep rodents out!

2. Plug in a whole house electromagnetic mouse repeller

These handy devices plug into the wall and use electromagnetic currents in your electrical wires to irritate the mice. They should not be confused with pure ultrasonic devices, which are not very effective.

3. Essential oils

The smell of essential oils can also help to get rid of rodents. Simply soak cotton balls with essential oils and leave them around your home. The best oil and top prevention tip for doing this is peppermint. Be advised that these oils should be used with caution,  and may not be safe to use if you have pests or children.

4. Use pepper

Pepper will also drive rodents away. Something that works well is cayenne pepper. You can sprinkle this in areas where rodents move about. This includes places like your cupboards and behind appliances.

5. Steel Wool

Rodents generally enter your home through cracks, crevices, and holes. These can be blocked up with steel wool. Steel wool also helps to prevent rodents because they may try to chew on it. The wool has a foul taste, and this helps to get rid of the rodents.

6. Moth balls

Believe it or not, the smell of moth balls also helps to drive rodents away. Leave these in areas where you spot signs of rodents. You can also crush moth balls and place them in water to make a rodent deterrent.

7. Citronella candles

Citronella gets rid of mosquitoes because they hate the smell. It’s the same for rodents. If you’re dealing with these pests, then experiment with citronella candles. You can also use citronella oil, or even place this plant in your home.

8. Garlic

Like many of the things mentioned on this list, garlic has a pungent smell. Rodents hate this and will avoid areas with garlic. Simply crush a few cloves and leave these in strategic areas around your home. Garlic oil will also help.

9. Store food properly

This is another simple, but not so obvious way to stop rodents. These pests only enter our homes to search for food. If food is properly stored, then the pests will find nothing and leave. All food should be in cupboards that rodents cannot get into, or stored in sealed glass, metal or tough plastic containers.

10. Clear clutter

Another reason why rodents enter homes is because they are able to hide in piles of clutter. Removing this clutter as part of a good spring clean will help to get rid of rodents. It will be a good excuse to clear out clutter or get it stored properly.
