3 Problems Caused By Indoor Moths

Indoor moths are not generally perceived as a huge pest control issue. Most people will never encounter these insects and do not worry about them. But unfortunately this isn’t entirely true. These insects are actually some of the most destructive you will ever have to deal with.

They are able to cause untold damage to your home and possessions. For example, these insects are responsible for the following issues.

The kind of damage indoor moths can do

Indoor moths cause a number of problems which is why you need proper moth removal. These include the following three things moths like to eat, the damage they cause and some basic remedial measures. If the infestation cannot be kept under control, then professional moth control experts need to be called in before your house becomes overrun.

1. Eating clothes

Indoors moths love to feed upon clothing. These insects especially enjoy clothing which is made out of wool, fur, silk, angora, felt, cashmere and leather. In a short space of time they can completely destroy your wardrobe. These materials are usually expensive and valuable, which is why moth attacks are particularly devastating.

You should also perform regular inspection of your wardrobes and long term moth removal. These insects like to hide away in dark cupboards that people rarely open. There they can feed upon your clothing undisturbed. To prevent this you should routinely inspect cupboards and also place mothballs. Also wash all clothing in order to kill the eggs or larvae which you may not have spotted. Clothing should also be washed before storing because moths are attracted by human sweat.

2. Eating fabrics, carpets and rugs

They will also eat any type of upholstery fabric, especially if it is made out of natural materials. This means that moths will often attack your furniture and also your curtains and blankets. These insects often leave enormous and unsightly holes in your carpeting. The issue here is that in many cases you will have to replace the entire carpet.

carpets and rugs

This can be especially irritating if you have expensive Persian rugs. Or antique furniture of sentimental value that is irreplaceable. The best place to start breaking the cycle of a moth infestation is by thoroughly vacuuming and washing your carpets.

3. Eating food

Moths do not only eat fabrics. They may also invade your cupboards and eat things like flour, cereal, pasta, beans, grains and even chocolate. In this case the food will be contaminated and must be thrown away. If you do spot indoor moths in your kitchen, then clean the affected cupboard from top to bottom too.

You may often spot one or two indoor moths hopping about your kitchen cupboards. If this happens do not ignore it. You must take action immediately. This is critical because it is not the moths which are doing the eating in all three of our scenarios above. It is actually moth caterpillars who consume your food items and cause the damage.

What professional pest control early intervention means is that you don’t give the larvae time to hatch into moths, breed and lay eggs. Implement pest control measures quickly and get rid of them before this happens and before the situation becomes a full blown infestation.
